Close to Amsterdam you will find an attractive traditional village. Volendam, former fishing village by the IJsselmeer. Nowadays there is little fishing and residents live mainly from tourism.
The cozy harbor is a series of restaurants, bars and souvenir shops. Watch the entering and leaving of traditional boats on one of the many terraces. Volendam was once famous for its eels. Striking is the number of bands coming from Volendam. Their music is often referred to as ‘the eel sound’. Succesful artists were for example The Cats, BZN, Left Side. Nowadays Nick and Simon are very popular.
Once a year Volendam organizes a marine event called the ‘Pieperrace’.
Lovers of traditional flatboats can watch a contest between these ships. In the harbour you can take the ferry boat to the most beautiful peninsula Marken. It is a picturesque place with wooden houses, painted in traditional colors.
